Tonight’s mystical experience with the Tibetan Singing Bowls will move us into a reflective state of awareness. It’s an opportunity to go deeper in our understanding and practice of meditation and prayer - ideal for those interested in energy work, esp. Healing Touch practitioners, and a perfect way for people of all ages to celebrate the Spring Equinox!

John Akim Gosaw shares his mastery and healing guidance in an unforgettable meditative experience of sound and light. At age 15 John was initiated into the nada or sound. He discovered the Tibetan Singing Bowls after a near death experience at age 25. True healing and insight touched him from the sounds and vibration from these ancient instruments. He has presented with Eckhart Tolle, and offered meditative experiences for the Calgary Teachers Association, various High Schools, Calgary Holistic Health options, Smed Manufacturing, City of Vancouver, Oasis Health Clinic, to name a few. A friendly reminder to all our friends at Knox Centre that we are blessed to have Dr. Richard Horsley visit for this weekend for a lecture on Friday evening and workshops on Saturday. Lunch is included on Saturday with registration.
Lecture: Introduction to Biblical Economics
Friday, March 5, 7:00 – 9:00pm $20
The people of Israel broke away from the “advanced civilization” of Mesopotamia and Egypt and formed an alternative society. In the ancient Near Eastern empires, as in the global capitalist economy, the centralization of wealth and power led to increasing exploitation of the people’s labor, fragmentation of supportive community, privatization of the public resources, and neglect of human welfare. In its covenant with Yahweh on Sinai, however, early Israel outlined principles of an alternative economy devoted to the common good, the protection of people’s economic rights, and mutual assistance in cooperative community. The monarchy centralized wealth and power again, in violation of the covenant. The prophets pronounced Yahweh’s condemnation of the wealthy and powerful for exploiting the people, and Jesus called for a revival of mutual support and cooperation in renewed covenantal community. “Biblical economics” may pose some significant challenges to the unprecedented concentration of power and wealth in the global capitalist system in these “depressing” times.
Workshops:
Saturday, March 6 10am-12:00pm $20
Economics of the Mosaic Covenant
The Ten Commandments, often taken as rules of morality, were principles that protected the people’s social-economic rights in key areas of social interaction in Israel’s Covenant with God on Sinai. On the basis of these principles Israel developed mechanisms of a “moral economy” in which the people protected each other’s rights to a livelihood by mutual aid rooted in recognition of the common good. Discussion of how the covenantal economic principles may be applicable to the overlapping covenantal communities of the church, constitutional countries, and international economics, especially under globalization.
Saturday, March 6 1pm-3 pm   $20
Jesus’ Renewal of Covenant Economics

The very center of Jesus’ prophetic teaching was the renewal of the Mosaic covenant among village communities in Galilee – communities that were disintegrating under the multiple demands of their high priestly, Herodian, and Roman rulers for tithes, taxes, and tribute.  Exploration of the “Sermon on the Plain,” the “Sermon on the Mount,” and other Gospel texts. Discussion of the pertinence of Jesus renewal of covenant for disintegration of community today under economic pressures of centralization of wealth.
$60 for all 3 lectures, lunch included.
Richard Horsley, Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and the Study of Religion, University of Massachusetts Boston, is author of a dozen books and editor of another dozen. In books such as Bandits, Prophets, and Messiahs, Jesus and the Spiral of Violence, and Galilee: History, Politics, People. He pioneered exploration of the historical Jesus in his social and political context, including popular movements. He opened up the recent discussion of Empire as the context of Jesus and Paul in Paul and Empire (1997) and Jesus and Empire (2003) and In the Shadow of Empire (2008). His new book, Covenant Economics: A Biblical Vision of Justice for All is a survey of how central economic concerns are in the Mosaic covenant, the prophets, and the teaching of Jesus.

The Labyrinth at Knox is a modified 24-foot diameter Chartres pattern Labyrinth. The Labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral in France, installed in 1201, provided an alternative form of pilgrimage, when it was no longer safe to make pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

The Labyrinth is not a maze, built to confuse, but a single pathway winding to the centre and returning out again on the same path. On the Labyrinth walk, we engage an ancient spiritual practice of pilgrimage and self discovery. The movement is a body prayer through the architecture of the soul. As we move to the centre, healing, transformation and the divine can be known.

The Knox Labyrinth is listed on the Labyrinth locator of Veriditas, Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

The Forum on Ecological Spirituality and Evolutionary Cosmology
There is an emerging conjunction of scientists, activists and faith groups on issues concerning the Earth Community. The idea of an Earth Community, looking at the entire planet as an integral, living and evolving system, is gaining acceptance throughout the realms of religion, education/science and even politics and economics. The late author Thomas Berry, cultural historian, eco-theologian and self-proclaimed "geologian", has argued that this new awareness "changes everything". From human-centred cultures an Earth-centred global culture is being born. We live in the midst of this awakening to a new way of being in the Universe - it's an exciting time! Knox Centre's winter program includes a three-part multi-session series titled "the Forum on Ecological Spirituality and Evolutionary Cosmology.

Introducing Ecological Spirituality and Evolutionary Cosmology: Tuesday evenings 7:00-9:00PM, January 26th February 2nd, 9th, and 16th. More than science, philosophy, religion, ecology, spirituality, evolution or cosmology, there is an emerging awareness of the oneness of all that is and how that integral awareness calls us to action in today’s world. Fee: $20.
Pre-register by January 22nd. Leadership: Don Smith

The Universe Story: Tuesday evenings 7:00-9:00pm, February 23rd, March 2nd, 9th and 23rd
“The Universe Story” is the title of the 1992 book co-authored by Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme in which they present what modern science tells us about how the Universe, the Earth and humans evolved to the present time as “a numinous and revelatory story” – not merely a fascinating intellectual “science” story. They argue powerfully that humanity’s failure to deeply (spiritually) embrace this “new story” is the root cause of many of our current problems. Fee: $20. Pre-register by February 19th, Leadership: Don Smith

The Great Work: Tuesday evenings 7:00-9:00pm, April 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27thEmerging from the wisdom of The Universe Story, The Great Work is the second ongoing theme of the Forum and will focus on the practical religious, political, economic and educational changes which are necessary to create a vibrant Earth Community in the 21st century

What Would Jesus Buy? follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they go on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse: the end of mankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt!

From producer Morgan Spurlock (SUPER SIZE ME) and director Rob VanAlkemade comes a serious docu-comedy about the commercialization of Christmas.  Bill Talen (aka Reverend Billy) was a lost idealist who hitchhiked to New York City only to find that Times Square was becoming a mall. Spurred on by the loss of his neighborhood and inspired by the sidewalk preachers around him, Bill bought a collar to match his white caterer's jacket, bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. Since 1999, Reverend Billy has gone from being a lone preacher with a portable pulpit preaching on subways, to the leader of a congregation and a movement whose numbers are well into the thousands.

Through retail interventions, corporate exorcisms, and some good old-fashioned preaching, Reverend Billy reminds us that we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. What Would Jesus Buy? is a  journey into the heart of America – from exorcising the demons at the Wal-Mart headquarters to taking over the center stage at the Mall of America and then ultimately heading to the Promised Land … Disneyland.

Will we be led like Sheeple to the Christmas slaughter, or will we find a new way to give a gift this Christmas?  What Would Jesus Buy? may just be the divine intervention we’ve all been searching for.

The Shopocalypse is upon us … Who will be $aved?

Film to be followed by discussion at a local pub in the traditional "Brewhoeffer" fashion. Come for great talk and good times!

This is a reminder that the Jesus Seminar On the Road weekend at Knox United Church begins this Friday. For information on our other programs check out our website at www.knoxcentre.ca. Register online in U.S. dollars here, or print off the registration form found here and mail it with cheque in Canadian dollars to Knox United Church. You can also pay at the door.

On September 11th, 2009, the eighth anniversary of “9/11” – a pivotal date in recent US and world history, leading Jesus Seminar scholars Bernard Brandon Scott and Art Dewey kick off a weekend seminar which will explore the interplay of Jesus’ teachings about the Empire of God and the imperial world order over the past two millennia. Keying off the title of Brandon’s best-selling book Re-Imagine the World: an Introduction to the parables of Jesus, the weekend workshop is entitled “Re-Imagine the World – God’s Empire and the 21st Century”.

On Friday evening September 11th, 2009, Brandon and Art will both reflect upon the complex dance which Empire and religion have participated in over the centuries with special reference to the “9/11 event” and how these forces are intertwined today. On Saturday, September 12th, in a series of workshops starting at 9:30AM, Art and Brandon will sketch out in more detail several themes starting with the imperial power familiar to Jesus, the Roman Empire, and Jesus’ re-imagination of the how the world would operate if God sat on Caesar’s throne, i.e. the Empire of God. Since Caesar had no intention of stepping down (even for God!) this was high treason and helps us understand why Jesus the teacher of compassion and justice would be so brutally executed. From these subversive beginnings, they will further develop how early Christians’ loyalty to “the Empire of God” clashed with Imperial authority in Paul’s early communities. Finally, the presenters will challenge us to see the wisdom of Jesus’ teachings applied in today’s imperial world and re-energize our efforts to work for the Empire of God in our own time and place.

Friday Lecture:
9/11 & the Empire of God 7:30-9:00pm
Art Dewey and Brandon Scott will sketch out the Abrahamic religions’ flirtation and seduction by empire and discuss how that is affecting the current religious and political situation.

Saturday Workshops:
Jesus’ World, the Roman Empire 9:30-10:30am
Pax Romana is a dominant myth in the West. But for whom did Rome mean peace? And what did it bode for the others? What was life like in the Roman Empire? How did its economy work? What were its fundamental values? What was the underside of the Roman propaganda machine?

Jesus’ Challenge to Empire 11:00-12:30 pm
Jesus’ preaching of the Empire (Kingdom) of God is a frontal assault on Rome’s empire. That assault has often been spiritualized, but its raw reality is attested in the crucifixion. We will use the parables of Jesus to explore his disconcerting strategy.

Paul’s Subversion of Empire 1:30-2:30 pm
Philippians 2:6–12 and Rom 1:1–7 are evidence that Paul is not singing the standard imperial tune. Phil 2:6–12 is an early Christian hymn that borrows imperial imagery to subvert the Empire, while Rom 1:1–7 is nothing less than coded treason.

Re-Imagining our World 3:00-4:00 pm
In this closing session the fellows will lead an open forum: What strategies of hope and survival can we learn from our tradition? How can we maintain a critical stance towards the complexity of our world? And how might we reconsider religion in a non-imperial fashion?

Register online in U.S. dollars here, or print off the registration form found here and mail it with cheque in Canadian dollars to Knox United Church. You can also pay at the door.
